Sowing The Seed

Often we talk about the Word of God being a seed and we are the sowers of that seed. Sometimes we are quiet sowers, planting the seed where people give us opportunities. Other times we are more aggressive with our seed sowing, throwing it in whenever and wherever we can. Regardless of our method of sowing, I want to consider that seed for a moment.

In Matthew 13 Jesus tells three parables in a row, all concerning seed. In the first he speaks of the soil conditions needed to allow for that seed to produce. In the next he warns that the enemy is sowing his seeds of weed in with the good seed. In the third we read about the results of the seeds that take root:

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” (Matthew 13:31-32)

The thing about the seed is that it is just a small thing. It represents the Word that plants the Kingdom of God in us. The seed could be a verse shared from Scripture. It can also be the Word put into action in our life, that others see and becomes planted in their seeking heart. It could be a well placed billboard or a TV ad or an internet story, or a music video, or any number of ways that the message of Jesus may be planted. The important thing is that we are busy with sowing those seeds. Not a day should go by that we are not busy with our Father's work of planting seeds for the harvest.

The beauty of God's Word, in whatever form it takes, is that people find comfort and hope in its promises and truths. We take shade in it throughout our life. It saves and strengthens us. However, we have to insure that it is more than just a written word. We have received more than the Bible; we have received the living Word of God and we want to make sure the seed we sow is the living Word of God. The Word is not a list of rules but an invitation to return to a proper relationship with the LORD God Almighty. It is a Word that must come alive in us because if it remains as a seed it is useless to everyone.

Sometimes we get busy promoting our church or our doctrine and we lose sight of the truth that it is Jesus Christ we are suppose to be promoting. We are all proud of our churches but it is not the church that saves people from their destruction; it is all about Jesus. We need to stop advertising the Church and get involved in people's lives so we are able to sow the seed whenever we can. We need to become expert sowers, knowing how to handle the Word correctly. We need to be able to hear the voice of the Spirit, that when he tells us to sow we will do it with no hesitation. None of us can afford to be disobedient in this matter and all of us are called to be sowers. Come on my friends, there are a lot of people who need the seed of Jesus today. Let's get busy with our Father's work. Sow the seed whenever you get the opportunity today and see what God will do with it,
